ARTISTS STATEMENT back to top

Stephen Dee works mostly on a miniature scale, sculpting individual figures or groups of figures, or sometimes complete three-dimensional scenes in display boxes, mostly taking an oblique look at the popular culture of the 20th century. He has undertaken many commissions over the past 20 years in portraiture or caricature for individuals, galleries and companies, and his porcelain sculpture of Brendan Behan is on permanent display at the National Museum of Ireland.

Although he has lived in Ireland since 1980, Stephen Dee was brought up in the famous Potteries region of England: Stoke-on-Trent. It was there that he learned the age-old skills of modelling from his grandmother, Olga Elcock, who was a peripatetic sculptor, moving from factory to factory, creating designs for Wedgwood, Royal Doulton and other well-known firms. Stephen Dee uses the most modern techniques available today to continue a family tradition that dates back to the 1920s.

Stephen Dee can create a figurine or scene to your requirements, as a unique gift to celebrate a birthday, a retirement or anniversary. Because of the durable nature of porcelain and bronze, the sculpture will become a family heirloom that will live on through the generations. For sculptures of well-known individuals - rock stars, writers, historical figures etc. - Stephen Dee can undertake his own picture research. To sculpt lesser-known people, the client must provide him with good, clear photographs.
